Asking Questions on Yom Kippur

Sonja Vitow
| poetry

Is this a prayer or
a small ship
on the horizon? Is the water
in the distance you
or the ocean? (I saw your picture
and it left me seasick.
I hadn’t realized I was
at sea). Are you three stars
in the night sky? Are you

the captain or the crew? Am I
the rudder? Am I
on board the ship?

what is the difference between
wine and waiting
for you? candles and
sundown flickering across
your shoulders?

Is this text holy
or did you
recommend it?

today I am sorry
today I will fast

today will be a sorry fast
all day I am full
from you
